Community Development Students Celebrate

Sixteen students from Brighton, Hastings and Crawley celebrated successfully graduating from the Foundation Degree in Community Development in July. They are the first group to graduate from the three year, part time degree which was developed by the Universities of Sussex and Brighton in partnership with employers in the community and voluntary sector.

For many of the students this was their first taste of education since leaving school. Graduate Gill, said ‘I left school with RSA typing and swimming certificates. The Degree was hard work, but it’s worth it in the end. I’m more confident now; I know what needs to be done at work and why. I’ll question things more and challenge people in a way that I wouldn’t before.’ For others the degree provided a way of formalising and building on years of community development work experience and expertise.

Graduates attended a ceremony at the Dome in Brighton on 24 July where they were presented with their degree certificates by Lord Attenborough, the Chancellor of the University of Sussex.
